Interactive Indirect Illumination Using Voxel Cone Tracing
Interactive Indirect Illumination Using Voxel Cone Tracing
We present a novel algorithm to compute indirect lighting in real-time that avoids costly precomputation steps and is not restricted to low frequency illumination. It is based on a hierarchical voxel octree representation generated and updated on-the-fly from a regular scene mesh coupled with an approximate voxel cone tracing that allows a fast estimation of the visibility and incoming energy. Our approach can manage two light bounces for both Lambertian and Glossy materials at interactive framerates (25-70FPS). It exhibits an almost scene-independent performance thanks to an interactive octree voxelization scheme, hereby allowing for complex scenes and dynamic content. This technique was presented at Pacific Graphics 2011 and published in CGF: research.nvidia.com More info in our I3D2011 Poster: maverick.inria.fr Our Siggraph 2011 presentation: maverick.inria.fr

Maajid Nawaz in a One-on-One with Riz Khan
Maajid Nawaz (born in 1977) is Co-Founder and Executive Director of Quilliam, a government-funded think tank based in London which dedicates itself to challenge religious extremism and to promote pluralism. Nawaz also founded a counter-extremist social movement in Pakistan named Khudi. Formerly involved in the global Islamist party Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) for almost 14 years, he was on the United Kingdom national leadership for HT and a founding member of HT in Denmark and Pakistan. Nawaz eventually served four years in an Egyptian prison where he began changing his views until finally renouncing the Islamist ideology while remaining Muslim. Nowadays, he is a member of the Liberal Democrats in the United Kingdom. Nawaz holds a Master degree in political theory from the London School of Economics. Riz Khan (born in 1962) is a British television news reporter and international journalist at Al Jazeera English in Washington DC which he joined in 2005. He hosts the network's flagship programme Riz Khan, a daily, interactive global show and Riz Khan's One on One, a weekly profile show. Khan grew up in the then British colony of Aden in the former South Yemen. In 1993, he joined BBC and three years later CNN. Khan became widely known as a senior anchor and host of his own show, interviewing more heads of state and business personalities than any other global interactive news show presenter. Micro-Rendering for Scalable, Parallel Final Gathering
Micro-Rendering for Scalable, Parallel Final Gathering
Recent approaches to global illumination for dynamic scenes achieve interactive frame-rates by using coarse approximations to geometry, lighting, or both, which limits scene complexity and rendering quality. High-quality global illumination renderings of complex scenes are still limited to methods based on ray tracing. While conceptually simple, these techniques are computationally expensive. We present an efficient and scalable method to compute global illumination solutions at interactive rates for complex and dynamic scenes. It is based on parallel final gathering, running entirely on the GPU. At each final gathering location, we perform \emph{micro-rendering}: we traverse and rasterize a hierarchical point-based scene representation into an importance-warped \emph{micro-buffer}, which allows for BRDF importance sampling. The final reflected radiance is computed at each gathering location using the micro-buffers and is then stored in image-space. We can trade quality for speed by reducing the sampling rate of the gathering locations in conjunction with bilateral upsampling. We demonstrate the applicability of our method to interactive global illumination, the simulation of multiple indirect bounces, as well as final gathering from photon maps.

Barcode of Life: Global Biodiversity Challenge
Barcode of Life: Global Biodiversity Challenge
Earth is home to an estimated 10 to100 million species but 250 years of study has formally described fewer than two million of them. The International Barcode of Life (iBOL) project includes biodiversity scientists from 26 countries working to identify every species on the planet using short snippets of DNA. Over the next 5 years, they are hoping to process 5 million specimens and they need your help! Students and youth from around the world, along with local scientists at colleges and universities, will participate in a collaborative social networking educational game in a race to identify and assign unique DNA barcodes to as many species as possible. airboyd.tv Courtesy NASA Dryden Flight Research Center Interactive Global Hawk: bit.ly The NASA Global Hawk Pacific, or GloPac, campaign is the first Earth Science mission to be conducted on the aircraft. The Global Hawk's ability to autonomously fly long distances and remain aloft for extended periods brings a new capability to the science community for measuring and observing large areas of the Earth. Ten specialized instruments will be installed in the aircraft to explore the trace gases, aerosols, and dynamics of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. The instruments will also validate sensors aboard NASA's Aura Earth-monitoring satellite. Proposed flights of the Global Hawk for the Global Hawk Pacific Mission (GloPac) are to be conducted in support of the Aura Validation Experiment (AVE). This mission will take place out of Dryden Flight Research Center and is expected to encompass the entire offshore Pacific region with four to five 30 hour flights. Aura is one of the A-train satellites supported by NASA Earth Observation System. The flights are designed to address various science objectives: 1. validation and scientific collaboration with NASA earth-monitoring satellite missions, principally the Aura satellite, 2. observations of stratospheric trace gases in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere from the mid-latitudes into the tropics, 3. sampling of polar stratospheric air and the break-up fragments of the air that move into the mid-latitudes, 4 ...
